Since no one was up for cooking tonight, we got takeout, which I went to get on the way home from picking N up from his after-school place. When I told him we had to stop off to pick up food he said, "Boys are good at ordering food and girls are good at cooking food. I like families like that."

I can dodge bullets, baby. [Nov. 23rd, 2009|12:40 pm]

[Current Music |Neverland - Marillion]

Especially, when they are fired from Microsoft Word.

So I have been doing my outlines for law school using "outline mode" in Microsoft Word. It has some nice features in that I'm not constantly fighting with Word in bullet/numbering mode trying to get it to Do What I Mean, but mostly behaves itself. I'm at the point where I want to print some out, just because I like having text to flip through. So before I go to print it, I take a look at it in "Print Preview" mode. Whee, no indentation at all! I should have realized this, as all "outline mode" is really doing is taking Word "headings" and applying a way to view them differently. So here I am annoyed/panicking that I will have to hand-apply numbering/indentation or go crazy with macro writing to get it into a real outline format. I decide to do a little googling and mostly find posts from people that if you use outline mode like this, you are SOL (Hi, Margaret! :-), but I find one tiny little comment somewhere that asked a similar panicker, "Did you actually try printing it?". So it turns out printing from outline mode DOES preserve the indentation it shows you on the screen, even though print preview makes you think everything is flush left. I guess it's better that it's broken in that way than the reverse, but still...

Yay, for 1L gratuitous stress (partly self-induced, I admit)!

[Current Music |The World Is Born Of Flame - 3]

Got this beauty today:

United Nations Compensation Commission (UNCC) In Affiliation With Barrack Obama Campaign to Assist Scammed Individuals In The Settlement Of Disputes Through Intercontinental Bank plc .

Attention:

How are you today? Hope all is well with you and your family? You may not understand why this mail came to you but kindly read for your perusal and follow the giving procedures for your claim.

The United Nations Compensation Commission (UNC

C) was created in 1991 as a subsidiary organ of the UN Security Council. Its mandate is to process claims and pay compensation for losses and damage suffered as a direct result of Internet Fraud.

We have been having a confederation meeting for the passed 7 months which ended 2 weeks ago with the then secretary to the UNITED NATIONS. This meeting was first held on the 8th of April 2003. You can view this page for your perusal.

This email is directed to all the people that have been scammed in all parts of the world, the UNITED NATIONS in affiliation with Barack Obama Campaign have agreed to compensate them with categorical payment sum of US$ 150,000 each. In its decision 17 of 24 March 2006, the Governing Council established basic principles for the distribution of compensation payments to successful claimants.

This decision was made two months before the resolution of the first installment of claims before the Commission.

As stated in the Secretary-General's report of 2 May 2006,it was anticipated that the value of approved awards would far exceed the resources available in the Compensation Fund at any given time.

The Governing Council therefore devised a mechanism for the allocation of available funds to successful claimants that gave priority to the three urgent categories of claims and which, within each category, would give equal treatment to similarly situated claims. Only when each successful claimant in categories "A","B"and "C" had been paid an initial amount up to US$2,500 would payments commence for claims in other categories. Accordingly, the first phase of payment involved an initial payment of US$2,500 to each successful individual claimant in categories "A" and "C".

However, for humanitarian reasons, all category"B"claims will be paid in full of a total US$150,000. A total of US$3,252,337,997.09 was made available to 1,498,119 successful individual claimants in categories "A", "B" and "C" under the first phase of payments.

This includes every foreign contractor that may have not received their contract sum, and people that have had an unfinished transaction or international businesses that failed due to Government problems etc. We found your name in our list and that is why you are receiving this email notification.

You are advised to contact Dr Erastus Akingbola of Intercontinental Bank plc , as he is our representative in Nigeria, contact him immediately for your approved bank draft of USD$150,000.

This funds are in a Bank Draft for security purpose, so he will send it to you and you can cash it in any bank of your choice. Therefore, you should send him your full Name, telephone number and your correct mailing address where you want him to send the Draft to you.

Dangerous stars [Aug. 31st, 2009|08:21 pm]

[Current Music |The Hazards of Love 4 (The Drowned) - The Decemberists]

I started reading N "Star of Danger" (one of the few, if not only, Darkover books that are ok for kids) for his bedtime story. He was curious about Darkover because J had been playing at having staring contests with him, and I mentioned that I used to actually play a game in High School (Hi Roger!) that used staring contests as a way to mimic a psychic battle.  The game of course, was Darkover: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/39

Of course the risk is, if he winds up liking the book, he is way too young for most of the other books in the series... Probably bad move on my part...

So I have a bunch of Graphic Novels I'd like to sell, but haven't gotten any takers on craigslist.  I currently don't feel like bothering with ebay (though I may).  I was wondering if there was a website that dealt with people looking to trade books.  Yup, http://www.bookcrossing.com/ So I may wind up going that route.

A player "explaining" why he straddles:

"It's not the $4, it's the control".

Yes, building a pot out of position with a blind raise from a random hand is a great way to keep control.

In fact, he had so much control, I made $500 in the game.
